Most customers are fairly astute when it comes to pricing for services relating to plumbing works. But do you know why we charge what we do? Plumbers have a dirty job that is very labour intensive, and we use a lot of tools! What would seem to be a small job can require many expensive tools to get the job done. Sometimes just changing a toilet can require a suite of power and hand tools!
For instance, if a drain needs unblocking, there are a multitude of tools required to get that drain operating again. Such as a “High Pressure Jetter”, to make a small hole through the blockage and allow the drain water to escape. If there is a major root infestation an “Electric Eel” could be used to cut the roots away, and after all that, a “CCTV Drain Camera” is used to inspect the drain for potential infestations or damage. If damage or roots are found with this visual tool, a “Locating Sonde” is used to pinpoint the location of the problem.
After clearing the blocked drain and the damage has been viewed, then we move onto the drain repair. If the drain is deep, it may require machinery to dig the hole safely. If the blockage is under concrete, a concrete cutting saw will be required to remove the slab prior to digging. All these items are bulky and expensive to purchase and maintain. The tools alone that are required for the above job could be valued at over $20,000 dollars, not including the excavator and trailer possibly required to carry all said tools. Other miscellaneous items including gloves, hand sanitizers, hoses, electrical leads, and safety equipment bring up the cost again. This is just one example of what tools and work might be entailed on a job.
